For Seasonal Events

So, you're in Swan Lake and think there's nothing to do? Well, you haven't discovered the Catskills yet! This page will highlight things to do in and around town each season.

Spring/Summer

Although we had a mild winter, and at times it felt like Spring, the calendar tells us that Spring (and now summer) is definitely here! Spring and summer are such nice times in the Catskills to sightsee or take a long walk. Here are some suggestions for a fun-filled day:

  1. Get yourself a fishing license and enjoy the opening of trout season. Check out "Trout Town, U.S.A." (a.k.a. Roscoe). Also enjoy fly fishing and fresh water fishing on the Willowenoc and Beaverkill streams, the Delaware River, and Sullivan County's beautiful lakes.
  2. Buy some peanuts and CrackerJax and head to Baxter Stadium in Mountaindale to see the Catskill Cougars play minor league baseball. The season begins in may. Call (914) 436-GAME for more information.
  3. If you like car shows, kite festivals, and art shows, check out the local newspaper (The Times-Herald Record) for exact dates. During the month of May there are annual events.
  4. Put some more mileage on your car and take an all day car ride. You'd be surprised how much there is to see in Sullivan County. Pick up a driving tour at the Sullivan County Government Center in Monticello.
  5. Visit to five covered bridges and enjoy a picnic lunch in the adjacent pavillions. If you really like historic bridges, visit the Roebling Bridge in Miniskink Ford and then relax at the Stone Arch Bridge on Route 52A (which happens to be a favorite of mine).
  6. See history unfold at Fort Delaware, Route 97, Narrowsburg. This is an excellent place to take children. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day. For information, call (914) 252-6660.
  7. Soar through the Catskills in a sailplane, airplane, or hang glider. Wurtsboro Airport is the oldest soaring site in the United States. Rides and lessons are available. Call (914) 888-2791 for more information. Sightseeing is available at Sullivan County International Airport in White Lake (Airport Road [County Road 183]) - (914) 583-5830 - and at Monticello Airport - (914) 791-5450.
  8. Other interesting places for children include:
    • Apple Pond Farming Center, Hahn Road, Callicoon Center. (914) 482-4764
    • Cabooses: Located at Broad Avenue, Roscoe - (914) 439-4857 and off Route 17 Quickway at Exit 96. Both open Memorial Day to Labor Day.
    • Catskill Morning Farm, Youngsville. Open April to December. (914) 482-3984
    • Choo Choo Charlie's Large Scale Trains, 199 South Main Street, Liberty. (914) 292-4826
    • New York State Fish Hatchery, De Bruce. (914) 439-4328
    • The Petting Zoo at Hadley Stables, Old Liberty Road, Monticello. (914) 434-9254 or 2957
    • New York, Ontario, and Western (NY O&W) Railway Museum, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe. (607) 498-5500. Open Saturdays and Sundays, 11-3, Memorial Day weekend to mid-October.
    • Taivail Farm, Hasbrouck Drive, Woodbourne. (914) 434-6475. Open Sunday to Friday, 10 A.M. to 6 P.M.

    • One of my favorite places to visit is Tomsco Falls Park in Mountaindale. Mr. Rashkin, the owner of the property, takes pleasure in showing off "The Niagra of Sullivan County." Guided tours are given daily, but call ahead for an appointment: (914) 434-6065. Make sure to wear a comfortable pair of shoes or sneakers!

When all else fails, see a movie! The only local theater open year-round is the one in Monticello, on Route 42. They have new movies and bargain matinees on all shows before 6:00 P.M. The Liberty Movie Theater, on North Main Street, is open in the summer. There is also the Apollo Outlet Center located on Old Route 17 (East Broadway) in Monticello, open year-round. For you bowlers, the closest place would be Liberty Lanes, located on Neversink Road (Route 55) in Liberty, right off Mill Street (Route 52). For even more exercise, you may want to try roller skating at Skater's World on Old Route 17 in Ferndale.

Enjoy!
