Although there has been no snow on Long Island or in New York City, there certainly has been enough snow in Sullivan County to enjoy the great outdoors. For those of you willing to brave the weather, I offer you these suggestions:
We have wonderful sledding hills in the Town of Liberty. These include Walnut Mountain (Pierson Park) off Route 55 (Swan Lake Rd.) and Hanofee Park on Infirmary Road, just off Route 52 East.
Rentals are available by the hour at Villa Roma in Callicoon. There is a groomed trail with a guide.
When I see the trucks on Swan Lake, I know it is safe to skate on our side! Now all we need is a bench to sit on so we can lace our skates! This is PRIVATE for Presidential Estates only! Morningside Park in Fallsburg has a free outdoor rink. No rentals, however. Located on Hilldale Road (County Rd. #52).
Many events are held throughout the season at the local lakes. Check your newspaper (The Times-Herald Record) or Catskill Shopper. If you plan on participating, make sure you have a valid fishing license. It will be checked!
For the beginner and those of you with small children, try Holiday Mountain at Exit 109 on the Quickway (NY Route 17). They offer a variety of rates. Rentals and lessons are available. For those of you more advanced, try Hunter Mountain on Route 23A in Greene County.
Many of our town parks have groomed and marked trails. Generally, you have to have your own equipment. There are local places to rent equipment on a daily basis. Call the following parks for further information: Hanofee Park (292-7690), Pierson Park (Walnut Mountain) (292-7690), Morningside Park (434-8810 or 8230). There is usually an updated recorded message.
Can't decide which to do? Why not do both?! Spend half the day doing one, stop for lunch and hot chocolate, then do the other! My family enjoys the trails at Frost Valley, located about fifteen miles northeast of Liberty. Not only is the scenery spectacular while skiing, the drive itself is worth the trip. Rentals and lessons are available.
Dress very warmly and take a slow, relaxed ride through the snow-covered woods. Let the horse do all the work as you "ooh and ahh" at the beautiful sights. Chances are, you'll meet some friendly creatures along the way. My two favorite places to ride are: Indigo Stables in Jeffersonville, off Route 52 on Swiss Hill Road, and Hadley Stables between Monticello and Hurleyville, on Old Liberty Road.
This is my FAVORITE winter activity! It's worth repeating. The best place to do this is at Apple Pond Farming Center, located in Callicoon Center. Reservations are required. Call 482-4764 for more information.
You really owe it to yourself to stop in and visit this brand new facility, located on North Main Street where Katz's Bakery once was. I bet you never knew just how much local history was in the making, right here in the Village of Liberty. There are ever-changing exhibits and wonderful displays by local artists and historians.
Located at the old school on Main Street in Hurleyville, this is also the home of the Sullivan County Historical Society. It is open year-round with continuing exhibits. Call 434-8044 for further details.
Located at 170 Main Street in Narrowsburg, offering year-round activities. Call 252-7576 for a schedule.
Located in Wurtsboro on Sullivan Street, this is a country store dating back to 1845. Open daily (10-5), year-round. A "must see!" Call 888-2100 for directions.
When all else fails, see a movie! The only local theater open year-round is the one in Monticello, on Route 42. They have new movies and bargain matinees on all shows before 6:00 P.M. There is also the Apollo Outlet Center located on Old Route 17 (East Broadway) in Monticello, open year-round. For you bowlers, the closest place would be Liberty Lanes, located on Neversink Road (Route 55) in Liberty, right off Mill Street (Route 52). For even more exercise, you may want to try roller skating at Skater's World on Old Route 17 in Ferndale.
