Heart-A-Thon Deserves Your Support by: Bill Liblick The annual WSUL/WVOS Heart-A-Thon will take place this Saturday, February 17th at the Catskill Regional Medical Center, 8 AM to 5 PM. Everyone in Sullivan County should participate.
It is estimated that cardiovascular disease will claim over 600 deaths within Sullivan County during 2007. That is an amazing number for our community, and reason enough why we should all take part in this worthwhile event.
Many respected television news magazines and talk shows have devoted entire shows to heart disease in recent weeks, because it still remains the number one killer in America.
I am well aware that Sullivan County is filled with many meaningful charitable events. Whether health related or civic minded, we have dedicated volunteers who collect donations in every way imaginable.
There are special walks, runs, dinners, raffles, and marathons seeking our pledges. Let us not forget all the mail and phone calls we receive from organizations requesting monies.
True, sometimes it seems as if everyone is asking us for money. On many occasions we even have to be careful to whom we write our checks. That is why we should all consider local events and local organizations first.
I am thrilled all of the monies raised in this year’s WSUL/WVOS Heart-A-Thon will stay right here in Sullivan County. Monies collected from the annual fundraiser will be dedicated to Catskill Regional Medical Center. The funds will be earmarked for the hospital’s Cardio Pulmonary Department.
Our two most listened to locally owned radio stations guaranteed $100,000 will be donated to CRMC in this year’s Heart-A-Thon.
The owners of Watermark Communications must be applauded for their commitment in fighting heart disease right here in Sullivan County. The decision to donate all of the monies to our hospital’s Pulmonary Unit must also be commended.
Although we have been vocal about the problems confronting CRMC, they are still the only medical facility servicing all of the needs in Sullivan County residents. CRMC has clearly suffered during the past year. Nonetheless, it appears they are really trying to get their act together and turn things around with better patient care.
It is vital that we show CRMC our support this year. Pledging a donation during the annual WSUL/WVOS Heart-A-Thon will be doing just that.
Throughout Sullivan County residents have been contributing by purchasing hearts from local merchants.
Donations will also be accepted throughout the day on Saturday, as the event is broadcast live on WSUL and WVOS. Those who wish to participate can also do so by phoning in a pledge, or visiting CRMC’s Garden Level Food Court.
The Heart-A-Thon event is a perfect example of local residents coming together for a great concern.
