Chamber of Commerce our Driving Economic Force by: Bill Liblick
I am often very critical that Sullivan County is deficient in focus when it comes to economic development. Many of us are sick and tired of hearing stories of college graduates not returning to Sullivan County because the employment pool for educated skilled jobs is lacking. And, to that end little is still being done, despite what some might think or say.
For commerce that is already here, there is one bright spot servicing existing businesses and that is the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce.
Many people are unaware of the important role the Chamber of Commerce plays in Sullivan County, so I am going to stray a bit this week from controversy to discuss this important organization.
In order for an area to flourish economically, a strong Chamber of Commerce is essential. The Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce has grown into a solid institution representing the interests of all of our business community and residents. Under the leadership of its industrious President and CEO Terri Hess, the Chamber of Commerce brings together business and professional concerns. Similar to organized labor, it permits them to accomplish collectively what none could do individually. Unaware to many, the Chamber also serves as a point of contact and center of information useful in the conduct of business and marketing for Sullivan County. Although nonpolitical in nature, as well as it should be, the chamber has gotten involved in certain issues of concern to both our business and residential community. They have become a major advocate for Indian run Casino gaming in Sullivan County, rightfully claiming that it would not only create an expanded and much needed job market, but that it would also be a big asset to existing businesses. Terri Hess who was born and raised in Sullivan County had to prove that she was the person for the job. Although moving up the ranks quickly, she was able to demonstrate to the Board of Directors her commitment to grow Sullivan County’s economy by having a strong network of businesses working together. Something which excites me to no end is that Terri Hess has proven that you can graduate from Sullivan County Community College, continue on to a four year university, and return to our area and succeed. I only wish there were more parents who could say the same about their children. Who knows maybe someday they will, thanks to the hard work of people like Terri Hess. Organizational skills and innovative ideas are what motivate Hess. She continually thinks of new ideas to bring our business and residential communities together. The chamber recently hosted a highly successful Sullivan County Block Party, which afforded local merchants the opportunity to present their businesses to our residential community in a fun atmosphere. The message of course was shop locally. For companies with few employees, they hosted an employee picnic for all Sullivan County businesses to boost morale. Their successful mixers which provide the ability for members of the business community to network and potentially share resources has become must attend events. Indeed the Chamber of Commerce is one of our bright shining stars inviting new businesses into our area, while assisting those that are already loyal to Sullivan County.
