The dog days of summer are officially here.
Before we know it Labor Day will have come and gone, Bethel Woods inaugural season will have been concluded, our summer guests will have returned back to their winter habitats, and our school season will have begun.
Ok – not so fast.
There are still a few weeks to go. And, there is still a lot to see and do in Sullivan County.
Each week our great Farmers Markets attracts hundreds of people looking for wonderful special nutritional items. Freshly picked vegetables and fruit along with naturally raised meats and organic poultries are offered for sale, along with other gourmet items.
The Farmers Markets are held Thursdays in Jeffersonville, Fridays in Liberty, Sundays in Callicoon, and Sundays in Roscoe.
In just a few weeks, the wonderful Harvest Festival will begin on the Bethel Woods grounds until Columbus Day.
For that special bargain, antique, and collectable hunter, yard sales are being held all over our great county
This weekend the 127th annual Grahamsville Fair will be held. Billed as the “Little World’s Fair,” it is an event that should not be missed. Great entertainment, exhibits, and events are enjoyed by all who attend.
I am glad to say that the Racino located at Monticello Raceway has become an exciting destination in Sullivan County. Besides video gaming and horseracing, terrific entertainment is being offered at the facility. Famous comedians, musicians, and singers are performing nightly.
Although winding down, the music festival at Shandelee, the Sullivan County Community College Summer Cultural Program, Forestburgh Theatre, and the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop are still going strong.
Rockbar, Vino, and Nature have become popular nightspots for our younger generation bringing a part of the New York City club scene here.
One of our hidden treasures is Bradstan’s, the local Bed and Breakfast in White Lake offers a great cabaret on Fridays and Saturdays, and known performers on Sundays.
Kutsher’s Country Club and the Villa Roma are still alive and kicking. They have wonderful dinner and show packages.
A drive through our county might be more fascinating than you think. It will lead you view first hand all of the magnificent work our dedicated volunteers are doing to spruce up their hamlets thanks to the Sullivan County Renaissance. The transformation of Swan Lake for instance is truly remarkable and should be viewed by all.
Many of our towns and villages are holding special events during the next several weeks featuring entertainment and street fairs.
Let us not forget Lake Superior, the Delaware Water, and all of our splendid fishing and golf destinations.
The Catskill Game Farm, an attraction which has been around for years will be closing. Although not in Sullivan County, it is a highly recommended day trip.
The next scheduled concert at Bethel Woods will be the renowned Boston Pops.
Speaking of Bethel Woods, it along with other hot spots mentioned above are bringing families in Sullivan County together.
This past weekend, our new concert venue played host to thousands as they enjoyed the music of Crosby Stills Nash and Young, the famed group which played at the original Woodstock Festival.
Legislator Jodi Goodman, who attended the event with her family, told me how it brought generations together. She said she viewed the performance from the lawn with her family on one blanket embracing one another.
See - you never know what will come out of an event held in Sullivan County.
Enjoy the rest of the summer - there is still a lot to do!
