Everyone Likes Neil Gilberg

by: Bill Liblick

Governor Eliot Spitzer got it right when he selected Town of Fallsburg councilman and Kutsher’s general manager Neil Gilberg to become our new County Clerk. And, I might add, the Sullivan County Democratic Committee along with their chairman Timothy Hill should be applauded in choosing Gilberg to fill the seat left vacant by George Cooke.

Everyone I speak to, Democrats and Republicans alike have nothing but praise when Gilberg’s name is mentioned. It is clear that he possesses the ability to continue the great legacy left by George Cooke.

Although Gilberg will have to face the voters in November, he has the time to prove to Sullivan County residents that he can take the County Clerk’s position to a new level. Gilberg will have the opportunity to be our ombudsman and advocate.

Although the County Clerk is the official record keeper and oversees the Department of Motor Vehicles, he has the opportunity to expand its role.

Gilberg says he has his own ideas and goals for the office.

As a means to prevent car accidents he would like to see driver education programs.

Gilberg, known for his commitment to our youth, claims he will utilize his office to assist those who might be on the wrong path in life. He told me he will employ his new responsibilities to become an advocate against illegal drug use and other quality of life issues.

It is still tormenting that George Cooke is no longer our County Clerk.

Cooke was one of the most respected, likable, and hardworking elected officials we have ever seen. He was so popular, he would run unopposed.

For him to be forced to step down from public service due to charges of harassment is very disturbing.

It is tragic to see a man who has accomplished so much leave office because his sense of humor might have contributed him to crossing a fine line.

Political observers were shocked when Spitzer deviated from the norm, and did not rubber stamp the County Democratic Committee’s selection of Gilberg. Spitzer instead advertised the position.

Although everyone expected Spitzer to select Gilberg, it was refreshing to see our newly elected governor at least make it appear as if he was opening up the process.

On the other hand, when our Legislature had the opportunity to be inclusive in selecting the person to fill Rodney Gaebel’s seat, Republican members were shut out.

Gaebel who served on our Legislature since its inception was not even asked whom he thinks would be the best person to represent his district. At least give the appearance of openness like Spitzer did. Why does it always have to be politics as usual in Sullivan County?

Our new County Clerk will have a lot to prove in a short period of time. Talk on the street is that former Treasurer and County Manager Dan Briggs will run against Gilberg in November. It would be more exciting if Briggs made a run for the Legislature instead.

Good Luck in your new position Mr. Gilberg. May you prove everyone right!
